Listen, I don’t want to knock the traditional college path…
My son wants to be a doctor… He’s brilliant but I don’t want him practicing on real people at first haha…
So no, I’m not against the normal education for careers like that.
And I worked my butt off to give my kids choices like that… if they want to go the traditional route for the experience, I’m going to let them but that’s not how I’m raising them.
My daughter will probably follow the path I’ve taken of being mentored by experts in her chosen field…
Let me give you the quick example I gave her…
My daughter talks about college. And maybe it’s because she plays softball and might want to play in college…
I said, “That’s fine if you want to do that.” But she also loves interior design…
I told her that there’s two ways to get into that field…
In the old days, you wouldn’t consider any other way. You’d go to school and take business classes and art classes and then interior design classes. Then you’d get an internship and do that…
We’re talking 4-6 years at minimum…
Or you could go the way your dad teaches… the way the world is going!
First, we find several great interior designers…
We can write them the greatest letter in the world that’s going to show them that you’re going to be the best employee they’ve ever had…
That you want to commit and hustle for them for up to a year…
And one last VERY IMPORTANT thing… you’ll do it for free IF they’ll mentor you!
Then she’ll work for that interior designer and absorb their knowledge and be ready to go off on her own in six MONTHS…
Not six YEARS!
That’s where the world’s going! That’s what I told my own daughter and that’s what I’m telling you…
I mean if you think back in history, there used to be apprentices for just about everything right?
Technology has changed the world exponentially. That little device in your hand that’s as powerful as a laptop has put information in your reach that would’ve blown Da Vinci’s mind…
But traditional schools are essentially the same, unchanged after hundreds of years. The blackboard is now a digital board or a Zoom meeting but the old-school education system is just that… inefficient and inflexible.
The smart money is on self-education…
And if Tony Robbins and I have any say in it, self-education is going to be the new normal 🙂
Which do you think is the “smart money” route? I’d love to know what you think!
